As a life coach and speaker, I’ve had the privilege of earning a successful living doing what I love—empowering people to find their paths, build fulfilling lives, and unlock their potential. But behind the rewards and achievements, there lies a deeper question that drives my journey: What is the true purpose of life?
This question, often asked by clients, audiences, and even myself, taps into a longing that goes beyond financial success, beyond accolades, and beyond personal achievements. True purpose is what gives life meaning. It’s a guiding force that sustains us, especially when challenges arise or the initial excitement fades. In my journey as a life coach, I’ve come to see purpose as an ongoing, evolving discovery rather than a single destination. Here, I’ll share insights on how I view purpose and how anyone can begin to tap into a more meaningful life.
1. Purpose Isn’t Just About Goals; It’s About Meaningful Contribution
Many people assume that their purpose lies in a career goal, an achievement, or a title. But while these can be important milestones, they are just part of the bigger picture. Purpose is ultimately about making a difference and contributing to something larger than ourselves. For some, it’s in nurturing others; for others, it’s about creative expression or building meaningful relationships.
As a coach, I’ve found that purpose often unfolds as we start to align with values that give our actions meaning. Rather than focusing on a title or income goal, I encourage people to ask themselves: How can I create value for others in a way that resonates with my unique skills and passions? This shift from “getting” to “giving” can transform the way we approach life and work, making it not only more rewarding but more impactful.
2. Purpose Is About Alignment, Not Perfection
One of the myths of purpose is the idea that once we find it, we’ll have all the answers, and life will suddenly become perfect. Purpose isn’t about finding a permanent state of bliss but about aligning our actions, values, and goals with what feels right in our lives.
I’ve seen clients put immense pressure on themselves to find “the one purpose” and stick to it forever. But life is a journey, and purpose can evolve. Your purpose may take different shapes throughout your lifetime—what drives you at one stage may change as you grow, experience new things, and gain perspective. Instead of seeking perfection, seek alignment. Continuously ask yourself if your actions, goals, and relationships align with your values and what feels meaningful. Allow your purpose to grow and evolve, just as you do.
3. Discovering Purpose Through Connection and Service
Throughout my career, I’ve realized that some of the most purposeful moments come from connections and service to others. When we think of purpose, we might think of individual achievements, but often, the most fulfilling purpose is one that connects us to others—helping, mentoring, and inspiring.
A question I often ask clients is: Whose lives do you want to impact, and how? Purpose is closely tied to service because, ultimately, we all crave connection. For me, purpose is grounded in seeing others transform, in watching people overcome their limits, and in inspiring them to do things they once thought impossible. Whether in personal relationships or in a professional capacity, purposeful living is about leaving people better than we found them.
4. Purpose Is the Fuel for Resilience and Growth
Purpose isn’t just an abstract concept—it’s fuel. It’s what gets you through the hard days, the inevitable setbacks, and the moments of self-doubt. Success alone can’t sustain you through tough times; purpose can. When you’re driven by a strong “why,” challenges become easier to face because you’re not just working for a reward but living for a greater cause.
Many high-achieving individuals have come to me feeling burnt out because they were driven by external rewards alone. But those who rediscover their “why” find renewed motivation, resilience, and a deeper satisfaction in what they do. Purpose reminds us that the journey matters as much as the destination.
5. Practical Steps to Discover Your Purpose
If you’re on a quest to discover or deepen your sense of purpose, here are a few practical steps to guide you:
Reflect on Your Passions and Values: Take time to think about what excites you, what you deeply care about, and what values are non-negotiable in your life. Passion is an indicator of purpose, often pointing toward activities and causes that align with your core.
Try New Experiences and Stay Open: Purpose often reveals itself through action. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, try new things, and meet new people. Sometimes, unexpected experiences lead to new passions and a greater understanding of what you want from life.
Serve Others in Small Ways: Purpose doesn’t always need a grand stage. Helping a friend, volunteering, or supporting someone in need can bring a sense of meaning and fulfillment. These small acts of service can often shed light on what brings you genuine joy.
Reconnect with Your “Why” Regularly: As you grow and evolve, so will your understanding of purpose. Make it a habit to reconnect with your “why” and assess how your actions align with your purpose. Regular reflection keeps you grounded and ensures your journey remains meaningful.
Living Purposefully, Not Just Successfully
As someone who has been fortunate enough to achieve success in life coaching and speaking, I’ve come to realize that true fulfillment doesn’t come from accolades or income alone. Purposeful living is about depth, connection, and an ongoing commitment to growth. It’s about making a difference, not just for yourself but for others, and finding meaning in both the big and small moments.
Whether you’re already on a path that feels purposeful or are just starting to explore what it means to you, remember that purpose is not a destination. It’s a journey, one that transforms as you do. Embrace it, nurture it, and let it guide you to a life that feels as meaningful as it is successful.
Living with purpose isn’t about having it all figured out. It’s about allowing yourself to grow, to give, and to contribute in ways that leave a lasting impact. Because, ultimately, the purpose of life is to live fully—and to make each day, each interaction, and each moment meaningful.
